Ignition electrical problems Empty Ignition electrical problems

Post by Pitbullguiller 1/11/2012, 3:04 pm

My starter solenoid went bad so I changed it.... but When I went to crank it I noticed that it only cranked for 1/2 second and now nothing (no start). Then I noticed that 1 of the 5 wires connected to the solenoid side where the main battery wire goes was not connected (My fault Mad and I believe touching the grounded tub). Now no start nothing.. I am willing to pay to figure this out but I am on a budget.

After this I changed the Ignition switch as I thought that it might have been shorted but nothing. And there are no fuses just old school link fused wires.

It’s a 1987 YJ 4.2 (no computer) / Weber 32/36 / automatic trans.

Anyone good w/ this ignition electrical stuff? Could I have shorted the new Starter Solenoid ?

Thanks man!

Question: Was your engine turning over with the key on the start position? Mine is not even turning over and All fuses are good.

Melvin at Happy Trails re-wired mine by-passing the computer. Thats means I no longer have the computer in my YJ... but I do believe that the ICM (Ignition Module) is still connected. But its about 100 bucks. Where did you get yours from and how much?... if you dont mind me asking.

Troy, that is the best price so far! Thanks man!

I called Oreillys Auto back and they had quoted me the PCM and not the ICM that’s why the originally said 112.00 but theirs is actually 27.99 w/ lifetime warranty and I am picking it up tonight cause I can’t wait any longer.

I like Rock Auto and all, but for $4 to get it right away is definitely worth it. i mostly have used them for wheel bearings, all the engine stuff for the Shogun. Also all the brake parts. Basically planned maintenance stuff.

It was not the ICM. Sad

So far Ive replaced ICM Ignition Module, Ignition Switch, Starter Solenoid, replaced Starter to battery 4 guage cable, and tested starter at the auto parts and still cant figure it out. Does not even try to crank, like dead! Battery is a brand new 34 Optima blue top. I am thinking there is a short somewhere in the ignition wires.

R u getting spark? Are u getting fuel? These are the first things u should've checked if u didn't already. Sounds like lack of spark but always need to be sure. Did u do a continuity test on the ignition system to make sure power is coming in n going out? Do your headlights or radio work? I know u said battery is new but did u check the voltage coming out? Maybe it needs a jump cause not enough juice. Maybe u burned a cell in battery.

Can you just the starter sol. with like a screw dirver and get it to turn over? That will cut out most the wiring and be straight batt to starter. If it turns you know those items are good. If not you know your problem is somewhere in there. What part of town do you live in?

It will crank right up if I jump the starter. But its not the Solenoid cause I have changed 2 times in the last week. I am in Mandarin by the way.
