Working with metal Empty Working with metal

Post by MudRaider 3/4/2012, 11:58 pm

A neighbor from down the street came down to see what I was doing today, told him i was cutting out pieces of 1/4" plate to make a rear bumper for the Shogun. Now this guy has a Pro Streeted 64 Nova, beautiful ride. First time he's actually came down while I was messing with things out in the garage. I usually go down and check out the Nova after he comes home from driving it. As i was cutting and spraying down the metal and saw blade with Windex, he asked if i had been in the aircraft industry? Question Question No, why? He asked about the Windex, and common stuff in the aircraft business. I said I had been taught that a long time ago by a street rodder in St. Louis. I used to use cutting oil. Carter Wilson, the guy in St. Louis got me to using it, showing me clean up was a lot easier with it, as when the window cleaner dried up, the metal flakes were all loose and easy to sweep up. With oil, it makes a mess on the pieces your working with, and makes big clumpy messes of the shavings that seem to smear oil everywhere when you clean up. The point of this is, if you are drilling holes in metal, or sawing metal, use Windex (blue window cleaner stuff, whatever the brand) and it will leave the work cleaner, and make clean up much easier.

Huh? Who'd of thunk it? I'll have to try it out. That would be nice not to have cutting oil with metal shavings stuck in it all over my Fab table.

are you talking about using windex as a cutting oil or while ripping a piece with a saw?
