K5 Diesel Blazer

K5 Diesel Blazer
This is my on going project.
Civilian Model K5 with a 6.2L Diesel C Code.
38" MT Baja MTZ Tires
700R4 Tranny, MP208 Transfer Case.
14 Bolt GM Rear and Dana 44 Front end with 8 Lug conversions.
The lift is a bit of an annoyance for me, it was built for mudding and has very little to no axle articulation. But its in the neighborhood of 10-12" lift. The gears are supposed to be 4.56 but Im not totally sure since the guy I bought it off of didn't do a great job of taking care of it or knowing anything about it really.
My buddy and I ended up sitting underneath it 20 miles from where I bought it swapping the tranny pan gasket. The previous guy put orange rtv on the gasket and since its not rated for oil it never cured, turned to snot and blew out.
Then later halfway home it wouldn't start, the batteries didn't have any tie downs and they weren't the proper size so they bounced around a lot and became disconnected. It started fine after reconnecting.
This is what it originally looked like, except for the sticker on the door, heh, that is something I added.

New Front Bumper

Really Needs a winch, thinking of a Smitty X2O 15k

Rear Bumper

I like the Dual Swing outs since it is unique.

The entire rear bumper is also an air tank, haven't acquired the compressor yet.

J Code Diesel
I bought a parts truck for $400, it is a military K5 and has the J Code engine in it. Turns out I got really lucky and snagged a 1982 J code which is supposedly the strongest of the blocks and made only that one year.

Hmm Oil shouldn't be coming from there.

I had the Block, Heads, Crank and Cam magnafluxed.
The only thing that didn't make it were the Heads. But I have a set of 6.5 heads coming, which bolt directly on and is a common upgrade.
Recently my master cylinder started leaking and I lost brakes. I have a new master cylinder and will be swapping it in the next couple days.

Re: K5 Diesel Blazer
Thanks for the feedback on the bumpers, I am glad Im not the only one that likes them.
Also in reguards to Boosted's comment. Only 5% of all K5s made have Diesels. But only the 6.2L as far as I know. Eventually I will be turboing it and it will make more power than the 6.5L Turbo Diesel that GM replaced it with and be stronger too. Since all a 6.5 is, is a 6.2 bored out.
I had some fun during the storms putting around in all the water, getting pissy looks from people that couldnt go through it.

Re: K5 Diesel Blazer
Swapped the front and rear Diff Fluid. Glad I did since it came out black.
Going to be looking into getting new drive shafts made since the angles of them are abit more extreme than I care for. Would also explain the vibration I get when loading and unloading the transmission.

Re: K5 Diesel Blazer
Truck looks great. Had considered picking up a K5 last summer, it was clean and rust free, except for the floorboard being broken where the seats mounted. That turned me off.
Love the bumpers, though. Is the 6.5 in it now, or is that an ongoing project?
Have only ever seen one other diesel K5, an OD green one that I usually see around Regency or Southside/JTB.

Re: K5 Diesel Blazer
It is a 6.2L NA Diesel. They never put the 6.5 in it to my knowledge, which is fine with me. The 6.2 with a turbo makes more power than the 6.5 Turbo. Also the 6.2 J code is a stronger motor since the only early difference between is and a 6.5 the bore.
I haven't seen the other k5 diesel, I think thats awesome since they are rare.
Thanks I love the bumpers too, heh. The spare motor rebuild has stalled out a bit right now due to money constraints. Hoping to get that back on track very soon.

Bumpers look tough on there. Like the idea of carrying a couple of fuel cans with a whopping 13 gallon tank in mine.

Re: K5 Diesel Blazer
Just got the inside of the Blazer sprayed with Rhino Liner, looks a lot better than with the carpet. I will have pics up soon.
Also I ordered a soft top for it and will have that next Thursday. I am very pleased and excited about it.
