i just picked up a 1997 mercury mountaineer 4x4 5.0. its getting a 4406 tcase swap,d30 hp cherokee front axle,custom bumpers and sliders, soa rear and 33-35" tires on 15x10 wheels. going to be a long slow build.....here it is right now

No, the dana 30 is actually pretty good. There are upgrades out there for it. The dana 35 is the bad one. The 30 is great for building if ur gonna stay stock width.

well its no bigger then a grand cherokee and they have d30's and a bigger v8....it'll be fine...and i like the fact this one is paid off and i own it

So the number isn't relative to a size thing? I thought 44 was the preferred upgrade, with the 60 and 70 being the ultimate? So much to learn! Question

The 44 is nice but its usually full width unless u either get it shortened or get one from an old small bronco, which I have. The 30 is strong and great for staying narrow.

i would love to put it on axles from a 73-79 f150 4x4 d44 front and 9" rear and keep it full width. but it will probably just getthe d30 front with a coil radius arm and a soa in rear on the stock 8.8 dics brake axle. good thing is its a d4 axle...3:73 with trac-loc

the mounty had title issues so it went back to owner....but i got a 99 explorer 4x4 5.0 thats way nicer now. will post pics tomorrow.
