I'm new to the site and only had my CJ a year, but am moving back to the Jax area in a couple months. I was wondering if there are a few local places to wheel with trails and maybe a little rocks? Some mud is okay, as long as the whole day isn't about "muddin". Also, are there any groups going wheeling local in July/August time frame? Need to get some Florida dirt on my Jeep when I get down there.

None of us are really into mudding that much, even though will play if a puddle gets in our way. Look back thru the past events, you'll see some stuff of trips to Hardrock in Ocala, a great off-road park with terrain that you will find reminiscient of Virginia. Let us know when your here and if you got any cool off-roading pics from VA, we all like to live by proxy thru others pics.

That's cool about the not-too-much-mud. Of course I make the cliche assumption that there can't be a whole lot more in the very flat sandy "Sunshine" state. Smile Remember, I didn't have my Jeep when there before, drove an old Fairlane. Anyway, I am a project guy who likes to mod stuff, so more of my budget has gone into wrenching than breaking. Sadly, there are few pics of MY rig wheeling... lol. I hope to correct that in the next 2-3 weeks... but it's a good 3 hour drive to get to the mountains. Around here a wooded trail is all you'll get. the highest sea level in Va Beach County is 21 feet... several miles inland, very gradual incline.

As for my Jeep, I bought it a year ago with a good frame and "running". Over the last year I swapped the engine, upgraded the carb and ignition, pulled the trans and had it rebuilt, and replaced the very narrow axles with slightly wider '86 CJ ones. They aren't quite as wide as a YJ, but are sturdier... D30 front, D44 rear, with 3.54 gears (vice stock 3.07). rear has Aussie locker. I have gears for 4.10 rear when I build my new front axle. The front will be a F250 HP D44 that I have to cut down and swap tubes to passenger drop... It's not tons, but a set of D44s will be a lot for a DD/trail CJ7, and 4.10s will be good for DD with auto. Also, have a roll cage built with me and a couple local club guys here with a few more tools than me (bender, etc) and a couple rocker guards/steps. My seats are TJ, and had to fab a couple custom seat brackets. My bumpers are sick, and will outlast the rest of my Jeep and most military tanks. I also added floor panels to fix pretty significant rust holes.

Not to mimic a build thread, just a concept of my journey to here, all while driving this to work every day since the first week I owned it. So just about now I just got the locker in will get my local-required inspection done, and will get it dirty soon. I've played in a little dirt an trails here, and plummeted through water over the windows at the trails near the beaches in the Outer Banks.

So mostly, I want to get out with a few good local guys and maybe get stuck, maybe reover someone else, and take some of the trail home with me, though I don't necessarily like the idea of leaving some of the Jeep there. Obviously, the more I break the longer it takes me to get back... so I like the idea of getting my DD home in mostly one piece. This also explains why I prefer a little less mud or big rocks. Smile

Anyway... July 4th is probably unavailable for me, but afterwards I'm all over a run here and there... look forward to getting out there with you guys.

BTW, any other CJs in the group?

Awesome jeep, he too drives that thing everywhere, anytime. Swapping my IFS front over to leafs after watching him and Dirty take there leaf spring jeeps everywhere.

Yep... Mine is the last body style before the square headlights... Not as vintage as the WWIIlaglat fenders" , but definately "old school". And yeah, they're as limited as your courage and your checkbook. But that's everything, right?

If you mean Jeep Rubicon axles under your rig, I wouldn't necessarily recommend that route. The Rubicon package is a decent platform if you want to buy a Jeep and maybe do lift and tires and drive. There is room for improvement, and though it'd be a upgrade for a lot of Jeeps, it's not worth the money. Its just cheaper to get some late 70's F150 or F250 axles under there, and a lot stronger. Smile

I love my Jeep, but all the best Jeeps have Chevy or Ford V8 drivetrains on our really light platforms... lol. When Jeep was AMC the always used Ford and Chevy parts anyway. Smile
