Re: 1992 XJ "Project Florida Crawler"
i guess i should post some more pics of the front bumper ive been working on.
made from 3/16", 1/4, and 3/8" plate.
the frame mounts are 1/4" and use 5 boltholes for each side, the d ring tabs are connected to the mounts and to the 1/4 box tubing i have running in the center.
its not done yet, i still need to build the outside pieces and cut some pieces off. the last picture will show how it should look. (also adding a 2" flush mount reciever in the center)
only reason i did just the center section is so i could have some recover points for Jeeptoberfest the next day. so i only had a few hours to plan and build something.
heres how i will eventually have it. the red pieces get cut off and the blue is what im adding.
and kind of a cardboard mockup to get the dimensions i need.

Looking awesome .... I like the "low profile" tactic. Very smart. Nice build.
Re: 1992 XJ "Project Florida Crawler"
You going to put any kind of brace on the back corner of the front bumper underneath the side marker lite? Highly recommend it to keep it from bending in if you catch it on something.

yes, it will get a couple structure braces throughout the bumper.

The extra pieces will make all the difference in appearance and just look more professional. Bravo!
Re: 1992 XJ "Project Florida Crawler"
couple pics ive got so far from this weekends damage
total damage for the weekend was......
crushed in exhaust
both tailights destroyed
bent up rear bumper
random rock rash
broken mirror
gas tank was crushed in (lost some fuel capacity and makes it hard to fill with gas)
part of the 8.8 diff cover was crushed in
dented up lower rocker panels
great time though, and nothing to serious

Re: 1992 XJ "Project Florida Crawler"
Just think of the money you'll save at the gas tank? lol Have you seen the Cherokee rear end cover that was on......... XJtalk I believe? Seems like a great idea for bolt on covers. Definately cheaper than an aftermarket one!

I guess it's a good thing there is a lot of them in the JY's. Lot's of replacements available. Mitsu's, not so much!

Re: 1992 XJ "Project Florida Crawler"
so, ive got a long list of things i need to do before any major wheeling.
-rear bumper
-sliders
-tub rear fenders
-relocate gas tank
-build/buy thicker diff cover
-tail light guards
so first thing i started on was opening the rear fenders up some. since ive stretched my wheelbase some i have alot of rubbing issues with the 35's hitting the back of the wheel well. this is bad for the tires and the fenders. and on XJ's anything besides minor trimming requires alot more work because you need to cut past the factory spot welds.
now doing this will give me a TON of room for wheel travel and allow me to cut down on the length of my bumpstops so i can get a little more uptravel which helps with the harshness offroad sometimes.
here is what im talking about with the tires rubbing.
and now its time to get cutting.

Re: 1992 XJ "Project Florida Crawler"
and some of the sheet metal work.
to build the new inners i used sheet metal that is about twice as thick as the factory metal.
also a good note: the bedliner on the outside of my jeep loved to catch on fire anytime i was welding to it....
the white stuff is poly sealant, its there to smooth everything out since i did all the welding on the inside of the jeep. so i still need to sand everything down and bedline it all.
