Shogun build - An 88 Mitsubishi Montero build
Picked up an 88 Montero a while back, fully intending to get a spare motor together and putting it on the road so I could disassemble the MudRaider and do a bunch of electrical work inside and put in the 3.5. Well, I'm supposed to leave it stock, , but what's the fun in that?
It's a real solid little ride, the PO didn't have a clue what they were doing engine wise and toasted it. I don't know what else I will find once I get the engine in, but I hope it's minimal.

Worked on engine assembly longblock is done, Oil pan, exhaust, accessories need to go on. The exhaust has 2 broken studs, those are gonna suck! It came with the weber,. I was going to detail the engine out, but why?
Re: Shogun build - An 88 Mitsubishi Montero build
Roger that. Figuring it will be this weekend. Should have it assembled sometime Wednesday, then spend the rest of the week detailing engine compartment.

Re: Shogun build - An 88 Mitsubishi Montero build
Mitsubishi had different names for the Montero depending on where it went. America - Montero, England - Shogun, everywhere else Pajero,
Re: Shogun build - An 88 Mitsubishi Montero build
So how did I end up with an English Shogun? The dude I bought it from bought it from dude who was stationed in England with the Air Force. He brought it with him when he came back. The only thing I wish it was RHD.

Re: Shogun build - An 88 Mitsubishi Montero build
All I need to do is get the engine off the engine stand so I can put the flywheel back on. Waiting for a buddy to return my cherry picker.
Re: Shogun build - An 88 Mitsubishi Montero build
Well. the engine is in the engine compartment. Sitting. Two hours of fighting and it just wouldn't slide all the way in. Only thing I can figure is the clutch disc didn't line up perfect with the pilot bearing. So I'm ordering a clutch pilot tool, and will pull it back out two weekends or so from now after the Florida/Georgia football game.

Using the girls car right now so I have lots of motivation. Gotta get it going quick. She's one of these >>>>
Re: Shogun build - An 88 Mitsubishi Montero build
Picked up the clutch tool today, $1.98 If I didn't get it centered with the socket as I've done 15-20 times before I will be PO'D Now just have to wait til next week for a day off.
Re: Shogun build - An 88 Mitsubishi Montero build
Can't help but think I didn't get clutch disc centered, it's the only thing that would keep motor from going all the way in. the distance is about right for the length of the pilot bearing and a little bit to stick out. Oh well. I don't usually second guess myself on stuff like this, but I really am this time.
Re: Shogun build - An 88 Mitsubishi Montero build
Sounds like you are on the track...I would guess it's the pilot bearing not lining up. Try turning the crank on the front of the block.
Re: Shogun build - An 88 Mitsubishi Montero build
$3 tool showed me clutch disc wasn't centered exact. Put the tool in, tightened it back up and slid it all together., Still haven't got the top two bolts in, my mitts are big and hard to get to them. Starter is on, PS is bolted back on. Motor mounts didn't want to cooperate at all, but finally succumbed to my persistence. Fixed the air cleaner on the Weber the PO installed, They had the breather hose fitting on there with nothing on it. took the fitting of and Loc-tite'd a nut and bolt on it. Fuel lines hooked up, alternator bolted on and wired up. Coming together pretty well. Will fire it up tomorrow.,

3 hours in. Everything but one hose I can't find. Radiator in. oil and water in. and I neet to go get 5 gallons of fuel. Ambitious, no, driven, yes. Biggest thing is I hope this JY longblock is good. The place is gone now so I will have no recourse.
Re: Shogun build - An 88 Mitsubishi Montero build
It runs. Pops and sputters like a mofo though. Have to take the Weber carb off. I saw some RTV around the base, I would imagine there will be some leakage if that is so. My gasket set came with a stock carb gasket, which will work under the Weber adapter, I guess I'll have to make the Weber Base Gasket. The PO got me on the light switch, just noticed it was broke also. Also had the wrong (too long) bolts in the thermostat housing. They stripped when i Tightened them up. I'm done for the day. Time to find my buddy the Captain.

Re: Shogun build - An 88 Mitsubishi Montero build
Thermostat housing fixed. got it running, but too late and noisy. The down pipes are split, exhaust is going out there. Off to Smitty's after all dialed in.
Re: Shogun build - An 88 Mitsubishi Montero build
It is running. Some issues, all liveable.
1. Starter tries to run on, hopefully an automatics starter will work, I have extra.
2. New Thermostat sticks, it bypassed the first few times then it wouldn't open. Stick another in it, oh well.
3. Exhaust leaks at the exhaust manifold to front pipe. Figured one of it's first stops would be Smitty's, but I think I will rob it off the the V8 to be Raider. That will quiet it down nicely.
4. Radiator has a pin hole in it. Time to get out the brazing rod and see if I still got it.
5. Biggest thing looks to be the accelerator cable. Have to see what the correct linkage is. What the PO has done, ain't it.
All in all, it sounds good. Had it idling at 500 rpm's no problem. OP looks good, water temp was good til the thermostat stuck. It was a little noisy (lifters) at first, but after a minute or two they quieted down nicely. Hopefully test drive it Wednesday, if I'm off.
