4wd conversion

im about ready to do the conversion on Ursalla. Has anyone done this before? Also lookin for some parts if you know someone with a 231 t-case or a d30 let me know. How much modification would it take to swing a d44 from a TJ under my Cherokee ?

Prob not too much modding for the 44, but the axle itself for cost a lot.
The 4x4 conversion should be easy if you have all the parts. What year cherokee do you have?

It's a '98

So make sure you get a TC out of like a 95 or higher. I am not sure the year they changed it but the spline count is diff in the older ones. I just say 95 to be safe. It shouldn't be too bad to do.

Not if you have the money ready. We can find parts I'm sure.

Parts can always be found if the price is right. Looking forward to seeing some good epics from this conversion. Seen this on Pirate and how its great to start with a 2WD, metal thicker or something like that at the spring mounting points.

96 was the change
and this is a very easy swap,dang near all bolt in be done in a weekend.

I think you have to cut the floor for the trans shifter to come though, but hey by now Troy should be a pro at cutting.

yes on some a hole needs to be cut. but i think the 98 has a access panel that just needs to be removed. but i don't mind helpping. get it to my house it it could be done in a weekend.

Finding the right parts and ALL the parts is more of an issue than the money

Jp mag has an article called two doubled the I need to read again. It was pretty detailed,so it would help on the step by step

you need a front axle,tc,shift lever and brackets,front and rear driveshaft,and make sure your gears match in f/r. and if you wanna do a lift this would be the time to put it in. oh and a tc/tranny crossmember.

Thanx, the lift is already in but I'm considering replacing the 6.5" coils and spacers with rustys 9"ers and a long arm upgrade

Gonna need a 4.88 r&p, a new diff, and should also do the slip yoke while I'm at it

So where you at with the parts list? I'm a firm believer in gathering all the parts and then doing it. My first big project was a V8 swap into an S-10. Five months gathering parts and reading up on it, then two weeks from popping the hood off til I let the ex take it around the block. All in a driveway. No help, with any of it, so you are one up having all this available help.

Somewhere between a 2wd and a 4wd. Finally decided to commite to part 2 of Ursalla

swap is pretty straightforward. virtually everything is bolt on.

you can normally pull a d30 and a np231 pretty cheap at a junkyard like Normandy.

dont forget all these parts also.
-front driveshaft
-4wd shifter assembly w/ linkage
-you need a 4wd transmision.
-rear driveshaft from a 4wd with the same transmission and rear axle you are running.
-and with any junkyard axles or tcase's, i would plan to give it a good check up and rebuild if needed

or if you can find a cheap 4x4 XJ on craigslist with a blown motor or accident damage, you can just buy that for a couple hundred and have all the parts you need.

and as for the d44, im assuming you're talking about the front D44 out of the rubicon, correct? that should bolt right in. But if you happen to find a Front d44, i would definitely be interested in it...
