u joint question Empty u joint question

Post by piratex 11/21/2011, 12:55 am

So I have never personally had to change out a u joint and as simple as it seems, I was wondering if anyone had any pointers to make it go a little smoother. I have to change it out before next weekend, I don't think mine will be able to take the trip.

Thanks yall

do you have access to a vice? or a press? or even a ball joint press?

if not, then a ball pien hammer, an old rotor or brick, and a couple old sockets can work

I've used a large c-clamp and a couple sockets before. I've got 2 and a pitman arm pulled that might work also if you need to barrow it

All u need is a hammer and some vice grips. Maybe a bench vise to hold the shaft still.
Take your hammer and hit the shaft on the solid part as close to the joint as possible. Don't hit the small/thin ear part or the cap. As u hit it the cap will walk itself out. Once its far enough to grab the cap with the vice grips grab and spin it back n forth till it comes out. Then repeat for all four sides.
Can also be done on the floor u just have to hold the shaft still. I prefer the floor actually.

If it doesnt move try spraying the cap area with some type of rust penetrate or something like that.

I am doing my jeep rears tomorrow night. I have a vice so I plan to make as little noise as possible. Sucks working on the jeep at night.

Try using a some pb blaster. Let it sit for a few minutes then take a 8mm wrench and put it on bolt then take another wrench n intwine them to get better leverage. O make sure u still have the transfer side installed and its in park or it'll spin on u.

Tried that one. I've also tried using a breaker bar. I think I need to get it up higher off the ground to get even more leverage

They shouldn't be that tight they're only 8mm bolts. Try heating up the metal around the bolt. If u can.

No I'm talking about where my rear diff bolts to the drive shaft which is what actually allows the dropping of my driveshaft. But honestly I could prob get them loose if I was a lil bit bigger of a guy or had more leverage

Another way is try pushing on the breaker bar with your foot. Legs tend to be stronger then arms.

I can't get an impact gun in there even with a swivel. And of course I tried using my feet. I've also tried using a hammer.
